What does it mean to be a manly man? Many people today, even preachers in Christian churches, present ultimate manliness as conquering others. To them, a good example of manliness would be Samson. Samson was massively strong physically; on one occasion he killed 1000 men with just the jawbone of a donkey. Another time Samson saw a beautiful woman in the city of Timnah and told his parents to “get her for me as a wife.” “Get her for me” almost sounds like a caveman with a club taking his woman by the hair to his cave! Jesus said in John 10:10b, “I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” More abundantly… oh now isn’t this just what we need to remember on a Monday?! The word abundant is by definition, “plentiful or well supplied.” Well supplied…I like that! Jesus did not just come to give us life…but a plentiful or well supplied life. Isn’t this great news? Do you remember that Saturday a few weeks ago when the sun was shining and it was about 75 degrees? I sat on the steps of our front deck that day and ate my lunch, soaking up the rays of the sun. The air was warm and I had that feeling of freedom and delight in the anticipation of summer. Read Entire Post…

But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
James 3:8
Four times in the first 8 verses of James 3, it warns us about our tongues and the words they spew out. He says Human tongues are small, but they cause huge hurt and terrible damage. Physically, it’s true that out tongues are small. They only weigh 2 and ½ ounces and in most adults are less than 3 inches long. (The longest tongue ever recorded was for a man named Stephen Taylor – his tongue was 3.74 inches long – wouldn’t you know that it would be a Taylor!)

I often call to my mind the moving scene in the movie, Shadowlands, where C.S. Lewis is conversing with one of his pupils at Oxford and he says to the young man,“We read to know that we are not alone. Do you think that is so?” The young man responds, “Well, I hadn’t thought of it before like that sir.” C.S. Lewis thoughtfully answers, “No, nor did I….”Truly, God has given us His written word to convince us of this glorious fact.

I was at walking around at CREW on Sunday night, greeting the young people I knew, and was introduced by Charlie to a new young woman in the church named Minerva. Charlie is a leader of the Spanish Fellowship that meets on Saturday Evenings at CF. He has such a heart for people and many of you have enjoyed seeing him show us how to really “Salsa” dance. He said to me, “Come pray with this young woman, God is touching her heart.” Read Entire Post…
Jesus said, “When you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites” (Matthew 6:5ab). In this verse, the Greek word for hypocrite is hupokrites, and was the word the Greeks used for actor. A hypocrite was someone who put on a show and was good at pretending to be someone else. Read Entire Post…
The church that all of us should make sure we are members of is the one described in Hebrews, “But you have come…to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are registered in heaven” (Hebrews 12:22a-23a). Registered literally means “written down on a list; engraved on a registry; enrolled.” This roll in heaven is called “the Lamb’s Book of Life” (Revelation 21:27), and is definitely the list where you need your church membership engraved. You might be on the rolls of various churches you’ve attended, you may have joined and become a member of a local congregation, but the big question is, “When the roll is called up yonder will you be there?” Read Entire Post…
