Loving One Another as Family: Calvary’s Tabitha Ministry by Jenny Steen

We’ve all been there. We’ve all had times when we’ve needed support—when it‘s all we can do to keep our heads above water in the everyday details of life. Maybe it’s a medical crisis or the loss of a loved one. Maybe it’s the arrival of a new baby. Whatever the circumstance, we need family by our side, helping us hold the pieces together.

Thankfully as Christians, we have a big family to lean on, our church family. Here at Calvary Fellowship, we support each other in practical, tangible ways through Tabitha Ministry. This ministry shares God’s love in the simplest acts: delivering a pot of soup, mowing a lawn, balancing a checkbook, or calling to share a prayer or encouragement. As we care for one another in these ways, we grow in becoming the family that we already are in Christ.

I’ve been part of Tabitha Ministry for over five years, making meals and coordinating meals. Last summer I experienced my own time of need, when my husband and I welcomed a new baby boy into our lives. That’s when we became recipients of Tabitha Ministry’s help. What a relief it was to have dinner on the table each night, despite muddling through sleep deprivation and the big brother transition with our three-year-old. We were so touched to have meals delivered to our home every other day for two weeks. We had never met some of the volunteers who came, and yet they dropped off delicious food and shared loving encouragement with us. And though it may have been the first time we met, they felt like family as our brothers and sisters in Christ.

Serving with Tabitha Ministry is flexible. Needs are emailed out to volunteers, who respond as they are able and feel led. Participation can be limited to receiving notice for one type of request (freezer meals, meal delivery, house/yard work, encouragement calls) or all of them. Most important, volunteers are made aware of their church family’s needs and can pray—the greatest service of all.

If you’re encountering a hardship or expecting a major life event in the near future (surgery, a new baby, etc.), please let us know so we can support you. And if you’d like to be on our volunteer list, consider joining us. The blessings are huge. Time commitment is up to you, and whether you pitch in once a week or once a year, you’ll feel the impact that God is making through your hands.

It couldn’t be easier, or more profound: God’s family truly loving one another.
